Ways to Grow Your Email Subscriber List

Last updated: Email Marketing 3 min read
Email marketing can be a great way to stay in contact with those interested in your company, but where do you start if you have no subscribers? Growing an opt-in list isn’t easy, but here are a few things you can do to get started.
  • Place your email newsletter form on your homepage. Make sure you place it in a spot that is noticeable and convenient for visitors to access.
  • Put a link to your signup form in your email signature. Ask everyone in your company to do it too, and maximize opportunity.
  • Offer free giveaways for one lucky subscriber, or a reward for subscribing, such as a coupon or gift.
  • Add the link to your signup form on all of the invoices your company sends. Make the signup form available on all of your outgoing communications.
  • Link to your signup form on every page of your website. Having easy access to sign up could bring in more subscribers. Try placing it in a uniform location on every page, like a sidebar, navigation bar or the footer.
  • In your “contact us” form on your website, include a check box to “sign-up for email newsletter.”
  • Add an “opt-in for our newsletter” check-box in your e-commerce checkout.

Already have a populated email list?

Even if you already have an email list full of customers that you have been doing business with for years, that doesn’t mean that they want to start receiving generated email newsletters from you. If you just assume they want to be on your list and subscribe them to your list without their permission, you may offend someone, annoy a client, or worse… get reported as a spammer. Adding individuals without permission is a fast and easy way to damage business relationships and foil your email marketing campaign. If your website has an online store or e-commerce function, you probably have a large number of email addresses from customers who have purchased something at some point. However, just because you have their email address, does not mean that they want be on your email list. Unless they knowingly opt in to your email marketing campaign through a checkbox or signup form, they should not receive your email newsletters. Even if only a few individuals forgot who you are and marked your campaign as spam, you could get blacklisted. An email blacklist is a way of monitoring ip addresses that send out unsolicited email marketing, like spam. If you get blacklisted, any mail you might send may not get delivered because mail filters will automatically hide your messages. One thing you could do is send a personal one-on-one email to the contacts on your list asking them for permission to add them to your distribution list. A re-introduction email is an effective and polite way of keeping touch with your contacts and building your email marketing list. It is a good idea to be friendly, personal and polite in your re-introduction email, as if you were writing to a friend. For example, it is important to remind them of who you are, why you are emailing them, and what you have to offer to keep them subscribed. Here is an example of something we would write to some of our contacts:
“Hi Tori, We, at TheeDesign, like to stay in contact with our clients and keep them updated about new developments in our industry and office. We are starting a company newsletter and we would love to include you on our list of subscribers. If you are up for it, click on the link below to sign-up. As our way of thanking you, the welcome email will include a special coupon for a free spokesperson video with any new contract.”
This is a great way to remind them of your services, get people on your list, and keep in touch with clients and future prospects. Cultivating a distribution list and managing it effectively could prove to be valuable revenue for your company.
