Socially Distant 4th of July Celebrations in Raleigh [2020]

Last updated: Community 4 min read

Like most holidays throughout 2020 thus far, upcoming 4th of July celebrations are expected to be unlike any other. Throughout Raleigh and the Triangle, families will be celebrating at home instead of gathering together for a big parade or watching fireworks. The vast majority of towns in the Triangle have cancelled their annual fireworks displays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a handful of pioneering local leaders have come up with creative and fun ways to celebrate virtually.

Below is your list of cancelled 2020 fireworks shows and alternative celebrations happening in the Raleigh-Durham area.

You can access the free livestream via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheClaytonCenter – which should be accessible to anyone regardless of whether you have a Facebook account or not.

In addition, the members of the Clayton Rotary Club are planning a wonderful patriotic tribute with their first annual Flags for Heroes initiative. They plan to have an inspiring display of large American flags near the grassy field and pond on NC 42 West just before Johnston Health hospital from June 28 through July 4th. The Flags for Heroes initiative is meant to engage the entire community and will serve as a reminder to celebrate, remember and recognize the heroes that have served and sacrificed for our freedom, health and safety.

Garner Independence Day Celebration

The fireworks portion of the Garner Independence Day celebration is cancelled. The Town is hoping to reschedule the fireworks for later in the year, but no final decision has been made.

Instead of the traditional in-person celebration—which historically has included fireworks, food vendors, kids activities and a performance by the North Carolina Symphony—the Town is planning to work with Garner-based Show N Tell Ministries to produce a television/video program that would feature Broadway stars, the 82nd Airborne Band, a Salute to the Troops and greetings from Mayor Ken Marshburn and Town Council Members. This program would be broadcast on the Town’s public, educational and governmental television channel starting on July 3 and also would be available on demand on the Town’s YouTube channel (youtube.com/townofgarner).

In addition, the Town is arranging to have an aircraft fly in a loop over Garner displaying a banner with an Independence Day message to residents.

Wake Forest’s Star-Spangled Sing-Along:

Oh, say can you sing? Regardless of your answer, you and your family are invited to participate in a virtual rendition of “The National Anthem” as part of a magical, community chorus. Modeled after the digital sensation, “Couch Choir,” Wake Forest’s Star-Spangled Sing-Along is an opportunity for residents (even those that “can’t carry a tune in a bucket”) to join together in song and contribute to a different kind of Independence Day celebration – all from the safety and comfort of their homes.

From now through Sunday, June 14, Wake Forest residents and families are invited to video themselves singing the National Anthem, then upload their video through an online portal.

Detailed instructions, along with the link to the online portal, are now available on the Town’s website.

The deadline to upload your video is Sunday, June 14.

Kino Mountain Productions, the Town’s video production partner, will synch up all the submitted videos into a virtual choir. The Town will unveil the finished product on its Facebook page and website on the evening of Friday, July 3.

  • Where: Wake Forest town website and Facebook page
  • When: July 3, 2020 @ Time TBD
